CCleaner! Awesome spybot cleaner/awesomeness trust me
« on: February 28, 2009, 11:26:08 AM »
Well my older bro has just got back from a big training thing for computer fixing people and while he was there the lecturers told them about a wonderful program that rolls all of the PREMIUM pay Spybot and Adaware crap into 1 simple program that is free! Essentially they said they found thins about 1.5 years ago and have been waiting for it to become a subscription jobby but that was 1.5 years ago and it still hasnt.

Never the less i installed it on my comp and ran the bugger, it found 4.5 GIG worth of temp files and crap on my machine, now i like to think that i keep my comp pritty clean and uptodate but this found 4.5 fucking gig. So i let it do its job and cleaned everything, now my comp is running faster and much more win. Only downside i found is that it deletes all internet history and when you go to forums it doenst remember your login thing so you have to relog in after every time you clean your comp. But man this thing rocks.

Download from here if you want

Checked it out - noticed it's possible to set it to *not* remove cookies/saved passwords etc from firefox. I have Firefox allow cookies session only unless I make a specific exception for a site anyway, though.

Ran the Cleaner Analysis and it reported 1.9gig ! I manually checked the list though, and couldn't find near 1.9gig of files there, and ran the cleaner and it said something like 4.58KB removed. I shoulda checked my free disk space before running, I guess, to know for sure what happened

I backed up my registry and then used the registry cleaner tool - mostly .net v1 missing DLLs and some missing extensions.

Will see if I notice any improvements or problems and report back if I do!

ps. I like (to think I) keep my install relativly clean - had Vista Ult x64 on this pc (e8400/4gigRAM/2.5TB hdds/4870) since last summer ish and found my computer to be pretty responsive and snappy since install - I probably have a decent amount of 'spare resources' anyway, to eat up any problems and make them barely noticable - though, still, I prefer not to use/install any anti-virus / 3rd party software firewalls / optimiser tools etc in general. I have very few background processes running, my system tray has only CCC/Steam/mIRC/Sidebar/HD Audio/Windows Volume thingiee/network icon, and I specifically disable system services for all OSs I run that I don't need/use - so I use as little RAM and cpu time as possible for 'background' stuff.

Just untick history and cookies for your browser before running.

I ran it and it claimed to clear 800mb. I'm not sure it's as amazing as you claim. It essentially just deletes temp files etc. or am I missing something?

I think the older your OS install is and the way in which you do 'housekeeping' and generally use and run the computer probably significantly effects how useful the tool is.

Just re-read this. Does it? It removes temp files, and recent files etc. But I'm not sure it is a spyware/adware removal tool.

Add Defraggler to the very nice Pirifrom software.

Nice spot, LC, thanks. I spent a while looking for a decent defragger a while back, and came up with a freeware lite version of O&O software's degfragger.

Looks like Defraggler might be a bit more of an advanced tool and I'll have a look at it :)

Yep i used that this morning having rememberd i wanted to check it out when i downloaded CCleaner. It anal ised and defragged about 30gig of one of the harddrives which i had used window degrag to sort only 2 days ago :-/ Seems to zoom through it and was far more fun and easy as you can still use other programs while it works. Though some files were not able to be defragged, think they were some maps in steam.

I noticed Defraggler linked to on the CCleaner page - I use Vista which supposedly schedules automatic defragging on a weekly basis to prevent serious defragmentation - and I have a bunch of partitions to keep different types of data apart - so I didn't bother checking out Defraggler too much.

The most useful thing from a third party defragger* as a Vista user, imo, is the ability to reorganise the placement of files on a harddrive. Files on the 'outside edge' of the harddrive are read/write-able at a significantly faster speed than files on the inner edge of a harddrive (pretty sure it's 25% diff or more usually!) - so os/program files/games especially/noticably benifit in loadtime if they're placed optimally. I use partitions and seperate discs to this effect - with my OS and games partitions placed on the outer edge of discs (2x1TB SATAII 7,200(?))- but it's possible to get the same effect using a defragger if that defragger allows file placement to be set.

To the point:
"Locate Files on the Drive
After analysis Defraggler lists all the fragmented files on the drive. Selecting one or many will highlight their location on the disk. Allowing you to visually see the location of files on the disk."
Anyone tried Defraggler and know if this means you can select a priority/placement for specific files/folders?

I used O&O a while back (pro/registered version) and it *did* allow file placement - very useful - dunno if the Lite version has the option?

If Defraggler can't do file placement,  :ugeek:

* Presuming auto scheduled defragging works okay...

Ungeeked translation:
Stuff at beginning of hard drive = usually loads faster (can be over 100% speed increase/difference).
Can get stuff at beginning using specific software (defragging tool usually) or partitioning setup.
