Well I haven't opened unreal editor in a few months now and I have the urge to actually make something. I was thinking about making a lightning gun mutator which would replace the sniper rifle.

So what do you guys think? Do enough of you miss the weapon to see it again? Or would you rather it stay in the past?

I have no idea if I'll finish this if I start it, I have a habit of quitting projects half way (just give me a kick up the back side if I do that). Modeling the gun will be no problem, everything else I'll need to learn as I go (but I'm sure there's tutorials out there).

I can't say i really miss the lightning gun, but there's always going to be people out there who want one so i say go for it!  :D

A lot of folk may say well we have the sniper now but lets face it, its just not the same, killing peeps with the lightning gun was a great feeling, go for it m8


I do remember it being started on Epic but it was never finished afaik

Alright then! First things first, do any of you still have unreal 2004 installed >_> I'll be needing some decent reference images from the editor (or a rip of the mesh itself if that's possible).

Sniper: boring bullet trace, puff of blood on impact, bit more blood if you kill em.  Yawn.
LG: flashy energy beam, lights up whole target on impact, you can see their skeleton light up through their skin when you gib em, and their head catches light if you get a headshot (even if it doesn't kill).

So much more fun, and so much more unreal imo.

Yeah I enjoyed using that quite a lot. Perhaps I can borrow bits from it (the lightning bolt etc), with their permission of course.

Did the UT2004 lightning gun have any moving parts? I seem to recall those 3 piece of metal around the front of it moving in some way.. I didn't play UT04 that much though due to lack of net access at the time.

Yeah the front of the gun moved when it was loading another "bolt" into the chamber. You can kind of see it in this video

Nah, I'm good for doing it myself, thanks for the offer though.

Here is a really early work-in-progress (less than an hour, this middle section still needs a lot more detail added).



I'm going to make this without polygon limits, then "trace" a low polygon version of the model over it. Then I'll bake the details over (taking the geometry of the highpolygon mesh and automatically making a normal-map of it on the low polygon model).
