I'm hoping it will be better than Vista, and thus a viable alternative to XP. Haven't seen it yet though.

I'm using it. If you already have Vista then it's a definite yes. Surprisingly simple to migrate to since it keeps all settings and installed apps. I installed it by mounting it to the drive, completely CD-free installation.

Gaming performance; there are reports of improvements. My games ran fine on Vista anyway due to 6GB ram.
The main changes are the way the explorer works, the new taskbar (very much like apple dock) is very useful and intuitive. And, this might seem silly to some, but the desktop themes are sooo cool. I'm using the "UK" theme.

One other thing I like about it, but its quite a niché thing, is I am now running dual ATi and Nvidia cards. Cant do that on Vista. The Nvidia is my PhysX card, while the ATi is the main card.

The ease of upgrade from vista makes it feel like just installing a service pack, just a very big service pack.
And for the price - free for a year, it's defo worth it.

installed win7 yesterday to duel boot.  seams faster, tho that could just be because its a fresh install.  not so keen on the new taskbar.  UAC is less anoying than it is in vista, tho i'm having a few app issues with it turned on (trying to write config files to prog files folder), but its nice not having a nag window every time i try and use the control panel :)

tf2/steam ran fine last night. didn't do any benchmarks tho.  will dig out my 3dmark vantage cdkey and see if there is any difference.

all windows 7 is is vista sp2.1  i'm surprised ppl are moaning about having to upgrade "again" when not that much has changed.  supose its cause ppl think vista is bad (for no good reason) so a new name may make them not be too opinionated before actually using it.

I did have Vista64 ultimate but it sucked for FPS in UT3 so went back to XP - but from what little I've heard off Windows7 it sounds promising

why do you say that?

Well that sucks.

welcome to windows! :P  but seriously, look at past versions of windows.  theres never been a "major" change between version.  95 > 98 was minimal (tho 98se actually worked!), nt4 > 2000 was kind of a big change, but home users wouldn't have seen that. 2000 > xp was just a better gui with a few tweaks under the hood (better game support).  xp > vista was a LOT of changes in the background, hence the driver hell at the start, and a few gui improvements.  vista > 7 is more UI tweaks etc.

don't forget vista was the first "major" 64bit OS too, which added to the driver issue.  now that most drivers are fine, win7 upgrades should be fine

ps. yeah i know most ppl went from 98 to xp, which was a big change, but the NT kernel was well developed with nt4 and 2000.

pps. noticed i missed out windows ME :D

Yep, and really well too. At some point I'll try do some number crunching with benchmarks both with and without dual cards, and post up the results. Maybe even write a small tutorial. But at the moment it's all a lot of effort and time, might not get around to it...
