It's come a bit too soon to be honest.

A chainsaw? What, like that couldn't be put in an update? It looks like L4D 1.5
Ok, I might be spoilt by what Valve have done with TF2, and the amount of new stuff they have added.

So they could have put all that stuff in a DLC, even charge for it if they have to. But I 'spose I can not be too mad at them, simply because they are a great PC game production studio and making more games and earning more money will mean they'll stay afloat amongst the other studios out there who have tossed aside PC gaming just because they're all too lazy to scale their game for different screen resolutions.

i assume the original was really more just a "technical test of ability" & really l4d2 is what should have been the original l4d.

I think it looks really amazing. But then thats the idea of a trailer ;)

Yeah rocky, i think L4D was a trial to see what they could do, what the publics response was and then L4D2 will be a push it and see how awesome they can make it both with storyline and weapons, people, interaction etc :D Shame i wont be around to play it when it finally comes out ARGH!!!!! However lets hope ill be online again before christmas :)

Awesome news, and can't wait.

But I somewhat agree with ekay.. and rockstar. The original game had a lot of these promises in it, even had some of them removed like the linking of campaigns, and it just seemed to lack the polish of a Valve game - it was heavily bugged and consolised to start with, and far from perfect. If they wanted to they could have fixed the original game with many of these changes, and added an expansion pack with 4 new campaigns. It just seems too soon to have a sequel nearly finished. But I guess the original was a testing platform, and a lot of things they wanted to do couldn't be done in time for whatever reason.

I still can't really understand why they weren't working on fixing the bugs and balance issues and improving L4D with these changes instead of working on a sequel so soon, even if they were rushed to get it out. They must have been working on it immediately after L4D's release, or even before, so what made them make that decision?

Edit: maybe what this guy says: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/s ... p?t=884904

I really would have expected (hoped) the next L4D to be on a new engine.

(will stop editing soon): the trailer looks like basically the same game, even the same sounds. And don't like the new character, preferred Loius.

L4D2=L4D with new maps, characters, weapons and a few balance tweaks.

Being as we have all done the existing campaigns to death that sounds fine too me.  At least we don't have to wait several years for it to come out.

I don't agree L4D hasn't been updated well.  It's been patched pretty quick for bugs, etc.  Look at most other game franchises - you'll be lucky to get fixes at all half the time.  For new content survival was pretty good in that it provided many hours more game time.

As for cost (L4D2 is a full price game), well tbh I have got my moneys worth out of L4D.  If they charge me again but give me a whole new set of campaigns etc I'll live with that.

The videos are here Zofo.

Tbh, I am pretty disappointed now after thinking about it some more.

Imagine if they stopped work on TF2 in April 2008 and announced that TF3 will be released in October 2008. The gameplay videos show exactly the same game, but 6 new maps (the amount it was originally released with). And that's all.

And TF2 cost only $20. L4D costs $50. People were saying that was too expensive for what it is when it was first released. Now they're giving us the same thing with 4 new campaigns and we have to buy it again.

Even if it was only an expansion pack, I'd be a bit pissed, but that at least would be acceptable. But trying to market this as a new game? And telling us about it when they still haven't even given us the SDK properly? (if they had, then we would have seen more new content than this new game already).

They gave us an unfinished game to start with (didn't even have all the maps playable in versus). I wasn't fooled by that into thinking it was new content. It was a one week job to add some invisible walls, while they were working on L4D2.

I think that releasing a L4D2 has more to do with the change in mentality towards consoles with the L4D game where releasing follow ups so fast is more common place.
I think you are right. I forget that L4D primarily a console franchise, unlike TF2.

I was thinking about it, and it's very hard for them to release a large update for a console. That's why none of the TF2 updates are on the XBox/PS3.

At best, they can release the game again with the old game included (which seems to be what they're doing) so that new players don't have to buy both, but old players still do. That doesn't preclude the option of making it an expansion on the PC, or making it cheaper if you own the original, or giving a rebate like Epic did with UT2003.
