BT Broadband Sux
« on: October 23, 2009, 15:33:33 PM »
Just got this email from those BT B******s

"Dear Customer,

We thought you'd like to know that your broadband usage in October has reached 80GB.

In accordance with our Fair Usage Policy, and to protect the online experience of all our customers, if your monthly broadband usage goes over 100GB, we'll restrict your broadband speed at peak times (typically this is between 5pm and 12am, but these times may change depending on the demands on the network) to 1Mbps for 30 days.

Please note: your service won't be affected in any other way - we'll restrict only your speed, not the amount you can upload and download.

We'll email you again to let you know if your usage exceeds 100GB. For more information, including tips on how to manage your usage, please see our Fair Usage Policy. Or call 0800 707 6044, 8am-5pm, Monday-Friday.

Best wishes,

BT Total Broadband team"

Tbh, if you're getting completely unthrottled broadband up to a bandwidth usage of 100GB, that's rather epic.

I have 30GB of on peak allowance, and unlimited off peak allowance. It's only throttled when demand on the network gets too high - they don't throttle specific protocols - and it should never go below 2Mb/s.

I find in my area though, I can almost always max my connection, and never notice it being slow.

I'm with ADSL24, who are a reseller of Enta.

I think what you have sounds pretty good though!

i'm amazed BT do usage upto 80gig, never mind 100.  tbh if you can, move to bethere, been with them since feb, never really had an issue (except physical line issues - damn BT) and it _IS_ one of the few trully unlimited isp's out there.

PS. most of us worked out how bad BT are yeeeears ago, catch up old man :P  >:D

As far as I'm aware most isp's do this "fair bandwidth amount" thing. Never been warned myself though, so I have no idea what my limit is.

Beats what they had (or still have?) in some countries tbh. Last time I was in Australia they considered 512kbs ultra-fast (uk was getting >4Mb speeds by that time I think) and 6GB a month would get your connection capped down or your bill increased.

80GB? Dude, that's like 60% of my harddrives, stop downloading HD pron  :P

Sky (LLU) are I think the only ISP to have a package without a fair use policy. Their top package is completely unlimited.

Virgin's 50mb fiber optics connection was entirely unlimited last I checked (tho is 40squid a month!).

yeah, it's entirely unlimited.  won't last though

personally I prefer the virgin media approach to this... unlimited consumer broadband for the kind of prices we are used to paying will not last forever.  Technically what's happening if you download a lot is you're using the bandwidth allocation of another household that pays the same amount as you but never really uses the connection.  That's fair enough, but the number of households that don't have at least one person who'd want to be a heavy downloader is going down, and can only go lower as more people become download-savvy.

The only options are, pay more, or find a better way to share the (limited) resources.  I like virgin media's 5-hour-throttle better than other from 10 meg to 2.5 megapproaches - not least because it's not that bad a throttle - I go down to "only" 2.5 meg, for only 5 hours, which is more than enough for web/gaming/voice/irc etc.

Basically, if I were a heavy downloader, it'd make me download off-peak more.  As I'm not, I don't even bother caring.

Last time I was in Australia they considered 512kbs ultra-fast (uk was getting >4Mb speeds by that time I think) and 6GB a month would get your connection capped down or your bill.

You can now get 10meg connections here in Aus although thats only in the major cities. All of which have a peak time throttle to 2mbps during peak times of 12am to 12pm and all have download limits... :( The connection i am on now dl's @56kbps... even through its a 2 meg connection and has a cap of 10gig a month and if you go over it they wallop you with a fine. Joy be unbound. May be a while before i am able to play properly with you guys again especially seeing as how im in the middle of a gold mining town in buttfuck no where!

Feel free to google maps Kalgoorlie, WA :>
