Checking my uni email in Gmail
« on: March 09, 2010, 14:44:53 PM »
Hi all,

I have a scenario that I hope someone might know something about.

My university email can be accessed via a) IMAP or b) a webmail interface. This is fine, but means that in addition to my personal gmail account, I also have to check my uni account, which means running thunderbird either a) all day, or b) regularly.

Gmail already has an option to retrieve email from POP servers, but there's no way to retrieve email from IMAP servers.

Would any service exist anywhere that would connect via IMAP to my uni account, download new messages (but leave them on the server) and then push them to a POP account, which I can configure Gmail to check?

If not, no problem, it's not a major issue. In fact, I can set up to have all my mail redirected to my Gmail account, but nothing gets left on the uni server, and there's a lot of talk that if you don't receive an important email but you have your email forwarded then basically it's your responsibility and your fucked, so don't really fancy doing that. It also says it takes up to a working day to forward the email?

So yea, any one have any thoughts?

thanks :)

your kind of screwed.. without running another app locally to do it for you (outlook) then the only other way is to get uni to enable POP

Yea, I know I could forward it through a client on my PC, which is why I thought maybe a service like this existed.

Oddly, in my research, I found that there is "SmartSieve" software on the uni mail servers, but it says it's for staff and postgrads only. Still, it let me log in, and I have just received a forwarded email (but not the one I sent as a test quarter of an hour ago!), so seems like it might be working :D

I use it to download my ISP mail account to my 127001.org mail account, it works fine here

Ye, I tried and tested SmartSieve before posting, but decided it didn't work (even though it seemed to be enabled) because I'm on the student mailstore, and it said it wouldn't work there.

But so far, it seems to be working :D

Problem with fetchmail is it would rely on my computer being on, which isn't ideal.

Hopefully this forward I've set up continues to work anyway :) Thanks for all your posts anyway :)
