NE BC2 server

After talking this around with Humbug and some community members (both already contributing and not) it's been agreed that it's worth posting this in the public channel:

We are considering setting up a BC2 server... due to EA's restrictions we can't run the server software on our own boxes, so we'd have to rent it from someone else.  However Humbug tells me the current income/expenditure can't cover an extra monthly cost, so if we want this, we're going to need more income.  What I'm proposing to the NE contributors is the following:  We take the gamble of renting a BC2 server for a month.  If donations increase, then the community keeps renting it.  If the CLs don't think there's the funds for it, they cancel it.

So... if the community wants a BC2 server, start donating   As mentioned here contributing gives you reserved slot access to any server that supports it (BC2 does!) and a host of other perks

Just a sidenote, donations can be as small or large as you wish and you will still qualify for the contributor benefits. So even a pound/euro each could be infinetely helpful.

sounds good, been meaning to start my donations up for ages now and this is a great incentive. Count me in. I will re-setup the standing order tonight. (if thats even poss - i dont have paypal and my pp acount is tied to my old card and i have to jump through hoops on fire to fix it, so i just dont use it).

If i remember correctly Killer Creation (the host we go with for the UK servers) costs 88p per slot, and a 32 man servers is £23 something.

Could be wrong though, that is about the cheapest we've found and Humbug might be able to find a deal for us with KC or something, so it might end up being a little cheaper. I think that £23 is a good target to aim for in new donations though.

I dunno if I'd say they're shit... but debranded and without the 3-month discount, it's £35
Price falls to a minimum of £28 if you pay a year in advance, but it also depends what deal humbug can get with killercreation

though according to the EA-UK forums there's still a freeze on server rentals while they sort out the server browser issues...

Due to the lack of ping in the server browser I basically always pick multiplay servers as I know they have low ping.  If the server name is just "My random clan server" I don't know if it's in London or Australia.

That said I am not sure I see a massive need for setting up another server - there are 1000's of generic 32p conquest/rush servers to play on?

I can always see the list of pings just fine in my server browser, i've never had a problem with it though i know others have.

turn off UAC in windows   have fun with your new found ping results in the browser

yeah but that's not a permanent solution really, UAC's there for a reason
