£400 laptop/netbook
« on: June 17, 2010, 17:00:36 PM »
Hey guys was wondering if anyone knew any decent spec'ed laptops/netbooks in the £400 range.

My step brother basically wants something that he can do work and listen to music on, probably about a 14-16" screen.

Obviously theres some googling to be done however when it comes to laptops im never sure what processors are the good ones and if 1.6ghz is actually good as im used to beastier pc's.

So if something pops to mind let me know.

Thanks ^^

a 1.6GHz atom is a netbook processor, and a bit weedy (you won't find one driving a 14-16" screen)

if it's a 1.6GHz Core2Duo / Pentium Dual Core* on the other hand...

PDC is the "budget" marketing name for low-end core2duos with less cache... some very-low-end ones are still called Celerons

for under 400 inc VAT you can get a nice laptop:

for 400 ex VAT you can get a pretty kick-ass one:
http://www.samsunglaptop.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=NP-R530-JB01UK

both me and Ryan can reccomend Samsung laptops... other sites might have better prices

same processor as the one I reccomended, slightly smaller hard drive (still 250 gig though!), 4 gigs of memory instead of 3, and it explicitly says 64-bit which is what you want...

pretty much equivalent to the one I linked, if you don't need the extra HDD space it's definately better, but I know nowt about that model personallly

Can't go wrong these days with an Asus, they are a strong little unit.

I think like a lot of places, it's fine until something goes wrong, and then the customer service turns out to be poo :P

I've just noticed that the Asus has a proper numeric keyboard - something more are doing these days - so it definately has my vote (though if the budget is 450, that i3-based samsung would be better)
