Final upgrade topic
« on: July 17, 2010, 21:09:44 PM »
Thought I'd make a fresh topic as the last one is a bit dated now.
Currently i'm looking to get this, it's a dutch webshop, but it should be clear enough.

I'm reusing my case/psu/hd's, i have a 520w psu, that should be sufficient shouldn't it?
Do you guys think I should change anything or is this a pretty solid setup for what i'm looking for? (a gaming pc that will suit me for the next 2 years or so)

Nice choice :)

not sure on how many watts you will need I just have a 900W tagen and thats more than enough. Surpose it all depends if you plan to overclock it (hope you do my i5 is at 4.2 GHZ - theses i5 are an overclokers dream)

If you do plan to clock it it may be worth getting the faster mem (depending on your budget) but the multiplers should still enable you to get a decent overclock even with the mem you have chosen.

as for the 'Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 CPU Cooler' got one of them for my sons 'wolfdale' (my old one) and it runs very quiet and cools well (hes running at STD - doesn't want the 4.5GHz the CPU will do!) But the HSF is a good choice ,even though it feels a bit cheap when fitting, with good case airflow it should work very well.

As for the mobo think all the P55 mobos are pretty good - think they have all sorted out the early socket problems. using a Gigabtye P55-UD5 myself not sata2 but my my mobo can handle my SSD speeds so dont really need sata2 really (yet)

well I got

G.Skill Ripjaw 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-16000C9 2000MHz Dual Channel Kit (F3-16000CL9D-4GBRH)  1      £102.12

I'm RMAing it but I have an open RMA number to send it back when I'm ready - it wont run at 200OMHz with my i5 - it could be the mem controller on the i5, but I'm sending it back in a couple of weeks when I'm on my hols.

Well consider very good memory as it was what I was advised by another overclocker

After doing some reading I reckon the cheaper ram should suffice for me, should be able to OC enough to my liking, i'm not really into the pushing it to the limit / changing voltages etc anyway.
As i'm quite unexperienced in that area, on my e8400 I also only went for the safe 3.6ghz

//ordered it, now we wait :P

hehe ye, it worked on the first go, so relieved. Last upgrade it wouldnt boot and i ended up sending back my mobo and ram, got new stuff, wouldnt boot again.. then i tried using a different PSU and it finally worked.
So frustrating that you have no clue what is wrong if it just doesnt start.

As far as I know the series of beeps from the mobo, (or lack of), as it boots up, will tell you whats wrong.  2 long beeps = RAM is screwed or whatever, that should all be in the mobo instructions.  If it dont even boot then I s'pose that's no help at all tho'    :-\

...except with the last mobo we looked at, which didn't have the pins to plug in a case speaker to, and didn't have an on-board one either... :(

ye were no beeps that indicated that anything was wrong. cause everything was working fine, it was just the psu that didnt supply enough power for the new rig i guess :P. As everything worked perfect after that.

Btw anyone got some gamesuggestions to test this new rig? Atm getting Crysis/Just Cause 2.

I did a bit of looking for you and apparently crysis with this mod is the best thing ever!!!  In answer to a question whats the best looking game around:

What does the Natural Mod do? Does it make Crysis run slower?

1 + .The Natural Mod adds photorealistic lighting effects to the game and yes, it will make it run slower. The difference is astounding. I showed it a friend who is a hard core gamer and his jaw dropped stating it's the best graphics he's ever seen and I agree with him. You can find more info here:

http://www.crymod.com/filebase.php?fileid=763.

I'm running it at okay frame rates on an core i7 system with 6 gb of DDR 3 ram and an overclocked GTX 280. This is at 1900x1200

There is no game out there that will tax your graphics cards as much as Crysis will even though it came out in late 2007, plus you can get it cheaply. I've heard that GTA IV is rather taxing but more on the processor than on the GPUs.
