New GPU?
« on: July 18, 2010, 00:44:17 AM »
Currently I'm using an ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT, any suggestions as to what might be a good sub-200 upgrade? (4gb ram, 2.27 core 2 duo) figured a new gpu would give me the best cash-for-fps upgrade so any suggestions? ^_^

Happy Hunting!

I was thinking perhaps this: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1GB-Gigabyte-HD-5770-PCI-E-20-%28x16%29-4800MHz-GDDR5-GPU-850MHz-800-Cores-DL-DVI-HDMI-DP

But I have no idea if it needs any sort of extra power (as in not directly from the mobo)... since if so I'll need a new PSU to boot >_>

if you do go for the 5770 it needs 1 6pin connector in addition to power provided by the motherboard.  If you dont have one on your psu you can buy a molex to 6 pin converter for a few pounds.  Just be sure that your psu has enough power for your new system.  Looking at the card specs on the ati/amd side they recommend a 450 Watt psu.

How about this:

Not sure how much it is in the UK, but you can get it for 1135 GBP in Denmark :D

Lololol zentix, nice briefcase :P

Yeah thanks for the links guys, although having just had a more in-depth look turns out my mobo only has a pc-e 1.0 slot... so I'm guessing a new gpu wouldn't do much atmo >_> And for the PSU it's a crappy 300W OEM one -.-

Aside from buying an entirely new rig... (since this one is 5 years old) any ideas as to what might be the best place to start for an upgrade? Or just save up and buy a new everything all at once?

To be honest, I see little point in upgrading such an old rig. My stationary is 7 years old and I would only reuse my mobo and the HD's.

Save up - buy new.
I'd maybe reuse the HD.
