Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I'm trying to install my old nvidia xfx 5200 gfx card on my girlfriend's pc (2gb ram, 2.2ghz procesor, vista 32bit (i think) service pack 2)>

It runs much smoother on portal than her onboard intel gpu but the portal Menu and steam overlay causes really bad image shattering/jagged images with the overlay sometimes not rendering properly at all resulting in a flashing mess. Problem is she uses the overlay to talk to me ingame hence it being kinda important...

I know that the 5200 supports pixel shading 2.0 and direct x 9.0 which should be fine for portal but the menu and overlay seem completely screwed....

Anyone have a clue what could be the problem?

Thanks, 'Nom.

Hey,

Can you do me a favor next time?

Rename the title so I'm not attracted to it. Thanks :)

Sincerely,

P.S. Sorry I've got no idea about your issue.

If you got the latest driver, try downgrading instead

My first thoughts were: check if it is vista 32bit/64bit, and install the latest, correct drivers.

Latest drivers are installed but I think the issue may have something to do with the widescreen monitor in use on this pc... and the card being so old it only supports up to 1024x720 (or whatever..) so that might cause the shattering? Even with ingame settings turned down and the resolution set to 1024x XXX (again tthe number escapes me) the problem  is still the same, I'll upload screenshots tomorrow :)

@Shattered, lol! :P

Prepare for pic spam:

First, a coupla pics showing portal working fine ingame with minimum settings - a constant 30-50 fps yet it drops significantly in large areas and drops to 10-15 fps while looking through a portal:

Then an image of the tearing ingame - I was simply firing repeatedly at the same spot:

Then a couple of the menu:

Then the rest are of the overlay, although they don't look that bad, they are in fact constantly flashing/flickering making reading anything impossible:

This last one is actually supposed to take a picture of the overlay but because of the flickering you can just see the menu:

Enjoy!

das card ist kaput

what you're seeing in the 3d game is one of the vertexes (the points that define the shape) is out of position, by several miles probably. so for whatever reason, the card isn't remembering where things are reliably.  most likely explanation is that the card's memory is bust

just to be on the safe side, run the vista memory checker to check the system RAM, but it's most likely the gfx card.
