I've never had a looping sound crash, and I have multicore (Intel) and nVidia (what people identify as the problem). I think the problem is the new drivers. People in ne IRC channel advised me not to update my drivers even though L4D complains every time I start it, because "if it ain't broke don't fix it". I've had no graphics problems, and no crashes.
I don't know what benefits the new drivers give, maybe 5 more fps in some games? Anyway, I've heard that 180.xx drivers cause it to crash, and reinstalling 178.24 helps. Disabling multiple cores (mat_queue_mode) might fix it as well.
