Omg when will my Interwebs be better!!!
« on: December 09, 2008, 21:03:20 PM »
Hey guys, just for the lulz i thought i would share a story.

Recently i have just got connected to O2 Broadband. (Wont even go there about my previous "isp"...) So all was looking rosey.

Suddenly I notice i have a regular 90+ latency on the ne tf2 server. Naturally i first blame the settle down period of 10 days. However, after the ten day period is over my speed hasnt got better, or even stayed the same, its got worse!

So just spent 40mins on the phone to o2 (excellent customer service btw, free from mobile to an english speaking person 24/7) and they asked me to do a speedtest using there software, so I did and here are the results:

Your Connection Performance Test Results

Results for 0165684**** on 9 December, 2008

Your Test Results
Your Download Speed:   1,364.9 kbps   1.36 Mbps
Your Upload Speed:   345.8 kbps           0.35 Mbps

Your Test Analysis
Your PC configuration:
Operating System    Windows Vista

Your network configuration:
MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit)       1500
MSS (Maximum Segment Size)       1460
RWIN (Receive Window)       5840
Window Scaling       ON
Selective ACKs       ON
Network cabling       OK

Current network conditions:
Packet Loss       1.1%
Round Trip Time       124 msec
Network Congestion       No congestion

Now i was always under the illusion i was actually paying £17.50per/month for 8meg, not 1.3 meg - mega rofl??!

So the guy on the fone does some tests and what not and tells me im 6km away from my exchange! The exchange that is just a 5 min walk away btw ;)

p.s. Im also doing this in a thread so i can keep a tab of events.

The distances to the exchanges are really silly sometimes. Back in the 1990s when people were just leaving dial up, I knew someone who couldn't get broadband in their house because they were too far from the exchange, yet someone directly opposite them on the same road could get it.

In my parents house they have two phone lines. Only one of them could get broadband, the other was too far from the exchange. We told them, they're both in the same house. One of them must take a long route around the neighbourhood. :?

bahh not reading all that..lol

did u try and remove cable 3 from the box (ring wire - orange?)

this might improve it.

what router did they send you / are you using.

also your extension couldof damaged when u moved.  Try replacing the extension cable with CAT ?  look on ebay they have um there if you dont want to wire it yourself
Cheers and Good Game

no, 'zeus' ;)

On saturday i shall be testing without the extension, and hopefully look into keeping my router downstairs, the only problem i envisage with this, is my wireless media box, but ill worry about that (if i even have to) at the time.

The main reason (other than the lols) i posted this is, is basically so i can keep a form of log, so i know dates and what was said etc.

Thanks for the input folks, ill let ya know how it goes by saturday night :)

I'm now going through this process too :(

I'm convinced it's the router that's causing the problem, but Sky have my username and password hardcoded in the router, and won't send me a new one to test if that fixes the problem.

Swines.

Thought I was going to be without internet for ages, while I had my router plugged in downstairs, but managed to get a wireless link set up between my Sky router and a Tenda router I use for wireless, so all is well. For now.

Can't you just run a traceroute and see where the bottleneck is.. or have you done this already?

Yes, this is where it gets a bit funny.

Using ping or tracert in the command prompt gives normal results.

However, TF2 net_graph 3 shows high ping, and high loss.

Sure, the initial reaction is that something is wrong with TF2... but then, why would a router reset resolve the problem?

Would you care to explain what interleaving is, and what I should do, and what that link is for? ^^

Okay, ran the mtr... As the problem is intermittent, this may not be the result when the problem is occuring. I shall run it again when I experience the symptoms in TF2.

Well if traceroute looks ok.. perhaps the router or ISP is realising the data packets are TF2 ones and doing something wacky with them. Packet shaping maybe.

Is there any configuration page for the router?

Interleaving is a way to arrange data in a non-contiguous way in order to increase performance, basically it keeps your download and upload speeds stable but plays havoc with your ping as the packets have a longer route to go.  When my line switched to 7 meg they threw it on there and my pings to UK went from 40 to 60, should be easy enough for them to take it off if its on

We really need a trace route from when the problem is happening
