I'm not sure what Zeus means by esc, either, but if you head into the console, then there are many votes you can call in there.

I believe they start callvote and then you'll get a little dropdown list. :) I think this is the best way to do it atm.

not really a web based admin thing.. there is however the same system we use to admin and control the tf2 servers.  There looks to be some plugins people have written aswell

So how do u go about changing settings then?  I'm still quite confused, for instance when u join it starts the game straight away, is there a way to start it in the lobby so u can change it to versus or campaign and also choose map and skill level

There's no way, from the lobby, to select which server you join.

At the moment, that means that if you want to play on a specific server, you have to join the server, and then call votes to get the settings you want.

So, in the console,

callvote map blabla
callvote changedifficulty blabla
etc.

There's also callvote restartround or something, which I find useful, as the game starts as soon as one person joins the server. Once everyone is in, you can restart the game. :)

[EDIT] Disclaimer: The only callvote arugment I can actually remember is kick, so the above may be wrong, but you get a little 'auto complete' box that should help you out [/EDIT]

Its all a bit limited, u should have an easy option to join your own server and change stuff, its my one big gripe about l4d
