Unreal Tournament 4 /
« on: July 07, 2019, 00:01:15 AM »
If any of you remember the glory days of ut2004 on titan and people like Piglet, Kops, Jozza, and Thor they still exist and are playing freon and VCTF at

Come along for a game one day.

In short:
-UT4 will be an open source community developed game, not done by Epic alone but with Epic dev team helping.
-UT4 will be free, but the community can make mods or different games and charge if they want in which case Epic gets a cut which is how they will make their money.

This sounds really good, Epic make a great games engine but pretty naff games.  Even UT2004 was a UT2003 mod not initially developed by Epic.  Now for UT4 they provide the engine and hopefully we'll get a load of good games off it as people invent them.  Big boost for PC market too as small time devs are going to invent for that first as it's much easier and cheaper then if it works maybe port to consoles later.

Shame they didn't give you a score.  Only got about half which is a bit rubbish particularly after hovering over knew I should have got nearly all of them.

Just thought anyone who loves minecraft (which seems to be a lots of peeps here) might want to check this out:

It's basically minecraft in space, still in it's early days (alpha code!) but my kids have really got into it.  One currently building a huge ship with drone fighters, turrets, etc.

Hardware / Nexus 4 is now 159/199 pounds
« on: August 28, 2013, 11:11:50 AM »
These are now in stock at new lower price on google play - wife just got one.

Obviously they are selling them off to make way for the new nexus 5, but that doesn't stop the 4 being a great phone, now at an even lower price.

General Chat / Inventor of the mouse dies (aged 88)

Douglas Engelbart has passed away.  He invented the mouse in about 1967, (no it wasn't invented by Apple!).

Anyway check out this video of a demo he did from 1968 which as video says shows the mouse, video conferencing, teleconferencing, hypertext, word processing, hypermedia, object addressing and dynamic file linking, bootstrapping, and a collaborative real-time editor

The Mother of All Demos, presented by Douglas Engelbart (1968)

Pretty cool geek history :)

Oldest son, now 11, got kicked for the first time today for being irritatingly good.

Playing ace of spades he managed to headshot the other team so often they got sick of it and vote kicked him.

Can now add pwning online to his other pivotal moments of saying daddy for the first time, learning to walk, and starting school :)

Games nE Play / Hawken open beta
« on: April 29, 2013, 11:28:57 AM »
Not been a thread about this for a while.

Been playing it a bit recently and it's quite good fun.  It's basically a UT3 mod with large mechs.  Lots in common with normal UT3 - slow walk, fast side dodges, same general weapons (flak, assault rifle, minigun, link, rockets, flak secondary).

You buy mechs and can then upgrade 2 ways - you can level up for minor buffs that you can pick (the only ones that really make much difference are to movement and healing).  You can also buy some bits to go on the inside, and an extra offensive and defensive item that get 1 use/minute approx (e.g. automatic turret, health drop).

Like TF2 you get classes (slow heavies, fast scouts, a sniper, there's now a medic mech too) but it's a bit different to TF2 in that burst damage is low so it's based around grinding the enemy bot down and not letting it heal.  e.g. in TF2 a sniper can headshot anything for the kill, in hawken the sharpshooter would take 3-4 shots to bring down even a weak mech.

Anyway it's free to play - if you do have a go check out this thread for promo codes with free money/xp boosts/etc in:

General Chat / Titan forums have died :(
« on: April 29, 2013, 11:14:26 AM » no longer works :(

The company that hosted them had been taken over and the hardware was getting old so no massive surprise.  They were discussions about what to do in the case of possible forum death so at least I think the forums were all recently backed up.

Anyway I am pretty sure someone will get them running again somewhere - if anyone knows where that is let me know.

Games nE Play / Love self flagellation? - you should try Super Hexagon
« on: February 22, 2013, 11:47:06 AM »

Just got this yesterday, and for those who like stupidly hard games this one is pretty addictive.

Playing this on my nexus 7 (think you can get it for most platforms including PC) so far I have managed a pretty embarrassing 15 seconds.  What's your record?

Incidentally it can be done - theirs a youtube video of the guy who wrote the game completing it.

Games nE Play / PAYDAY: The Heist
« on: September 10, 2012, 13:52:04 PM »

Could alternatively be known as "L4D: The robbery"

Got this recently and thought I would recommend it.  It's built on L4D engine only instead of escaping zombies you are escaping police as you try to pull of the ultimate robbery - so same 4 player co-op gameplay.  Each of the missions has you trying to a number of things, e.g. find bank manager, get key, kill cameras, drill volt, thermite into main vault, escape out the back.  Stopping you are lots of police, guards, etc that in a very L4D way keep appearing in waves.  All the missions are pretty different and have a bit of humour (including one in mercy hospital complete with twitching corpse bags).

You can take hostages and that allows you to bargain back any captured team mates (i.e. if police *kill* you).  It has 3 class trees that you unlock as you gain money from your heists which give out different guns and so on.

Anyway if you like L4D but got a bit bored and want a new take on it, then I recommend giving this a go :)
