what I'm after is a new lappy we can take on holidays - plug into the back of the LCD TV via hdmi and hay presso can watch all my DVDs.

The present one we use is an ASUS f300jlc it has no HDMI socket and the DVD is fubblered - have an external DVD drive for it for hols ( and I left the drive at home on the last hols  ::) )

Specs
i3 - makes sence - would like a sandy bridge - but not essential
HD- doesn't need to be big - present one is 120GB and have 23GB free
Blue ray makes sense - I rewrite would be nice but not essential
Win7
3-4GB mem
Remote for fast forward etc save messing with mouse  would be nice
screen - present one is 15,4inch and is fine - doesn't need to be big
would be nice to have decent sound for when 'NO' HDMI TV is available on location  :'(
battery life not that important
Gaming - not important but hummm................
Budjet £300 - £500 but the cheaper the better
wont something that will last

it nearly as good as my PC how dare you

We need a new laptop as well takes nearly a year to turn on. But mum and dad say it is ok..

Why a laptop you could just maybe get a portable DVD player which will be cheaper and lighter.

and the last time a fresh install of the OS was done ? how much 'bloatware' is on it ?

and if theres no TV with the right connector ?

Plus it doubles to get internet access and a few games.

MSI FX600 Blu-ray and only £499 at argos and suppose to have great sound - decent GPU ,humm.......................

Well dad says he doesn't have a clue what some things are so he wont delete them.

Fresh install of OS? Why would you do that?

It is recommended (or was with older versions of windows) that you re installed the OS every now and again i believe. Idk whether that is still the case with Win7 though.

you don't have to with win7, but it can be easier than getting rid of all the crud that accumulates on an install (random startup programs for this, that, or the other)

Poseidon, for XP, one gets a huuuge improvement with a fresh install.

XP and software un-installers leave a lot of rubbish all over the registry and startup/service areas of Windows.

Back on thread guys  :police:

spent hours looking and reading reviews and every time I though I had a good one it was either too expensive, poor sound, or poor viewing angles - but think I've found a winner

the main job this lappy has to do it play DVDS with a good screen and sound on Hols, if theres a tv/lcd with a HDMI conection great - but its not always there

Toshiba Satellite A660-17T 16 inch Notebook, Intel Core i3-350M 2.26GHz, 4Gb, 500Gb, DVDSMDL, HDMI, Windows 7 Home Premium £480

Screen size    16.0in
Resolution    1366 x 768
Nvidia GeForce 310M-   512MB1
HDMI outputs    1
Audio chipset    Nvidia HD Audio
Harman Kardon Speakers and Dolby Advanced Audio
HD 500GB

But no Blue tooth - buy a dongle
No Blu ray - fit one myself when needed

Or could get one used here
